How to Choose a Bed for Your Dog or Cat
Updated: 8 hours ago
Watch where your pet settles for a nap. A dog that stretches across the floor may prefer a flat mattress, while a cat that curls up under a chair may like a covered bed. Start with their sleeping habits, then check the fit, height and cleaning instructions.

Measure the space your pet actually uses
Measure your dog or cat while they’re relaxed in their usual sleeping position. If they alternate between curling up and stretching out, measure them stretched out as well. Compare those measurements with the usable sleeping area on the size chart. Thick bolsters can make the outer dimensions noticeably larger than the space inside.
Check the footprint in the room before ordering. In a small flat, a bed that fits beside a sofa or under a desk can give your pet a quiet spot without blocking a walkway.
Choose a shape that suits how they sleep
Flat foam mattress. Gives a pet that likes to stretch out an open sleeping surface. Check the mattress thickness and how easy it is to step onto.
Bolster or donut bed. Raised sides give a pet that curls up a place to lean or rest its head. Check the height of the entrance and the space inside the rim.
Covered bed. Can suit a cat or small dog that already chooses sheltered spots to rest. Check that the opening is easy to use.
Raised bed. A raised fabric platform lets air circulate underneath. Check its height and the maker’s instructions for where it can be used.
Think about access, cleaning and wear
For a pet that finds stepping up difficult, look for a low entry and a stable base. If stiffness or changes in movement are new, speak to your vet. If the bed sees muddy paws or frequent shedding, check whether the cover comes off and can go in the washing machine. Read the care label for the inner cushion or foam as well.
Look at the seams, zip and base as well as the fabric. A spare cover can make frequent washing easier. Once the fit and care requirements are clear, choose a colour and finish that suit the room and your budget.
Put the bed where your pet wants to rest
Start in a quiet spot your pet already uses, away from draughts and busy doorways. A familiar blanket may help them settle. In a home with several pets, give each animal access to its own resting spot.
